Why cold weather makes chips grow

Glass contracts when it gets cold. The chip itself is a tiny pocket of air and contamination, and when the surrounding glass shrinks, it pulls on the edges of that break. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles act like a slow lever, widening the gap a fraction of a millimetre at a time.

Once a crack starts moving, it follows the path of least resistance. Often that path is straight toward the edge of the windshield, where the glass is stressed by the frame and bonding.

The defroster mistake

A frozen windshield covered in frost is the exact wrong surface to hit with a blast of hot air. The outside is still icy while the inner layer heats quickly, creating a sharp temperature gradient across the glass. That gradient is focused on any existing weak point.

The better routine is to start with lukewarm air and let the glass warm gradually, or use a proper ice scraper before the heater ramps up. It is also a good reason to clear the chip before winter sets in.

Grit, sand, and wiper wear

Road departments in Davis and Weber Counties keep sanding material on the pavement long after storms pass. That grit is picked up by traffic and thrown at the glass, adding new impacts and helping existing chips spread under the vibration and load of daily driving.

Worn wipers make it worse. A blade that is torn or stiff drags abrasive particles across the windshield, scouring the surface and creating stress around any damaged area.

What to do before the next freeze

If you already have a chip, the best timing is now. Resin seals the break and removes the internal void that freeze-thaw cycles exploit. Once temperatures stay below freezing, the repair window still works, but the sooner the break is sealed, the better the clarity and structural result.
