Repair or replace? How windshield damage is actually assessed

Location matters more than size

Damage within a couple of inches of the windshield edge is the hardest case. The edge is where the glass is bonded to the body and where structural load concentrates, so a break there has a much higher chance of continuing to run.

Damage sitting directly in the driver's primary sight line is a separate consideration. A repair leaves some visible trace, and in that specific area a faint distortion is worth weighing before you proceed.

Depth and contamination

If a break has penetrated through to the plastic interlayer, resin cannot restore it the way it can a break confined to the outer layer. And if dirt, wax, or moisture has cured inside the void, the resin has less clean glass to bond to.

This is the practical reason technicians push for early repair. It is not a sales tactic — contamination genuinely limits the outcome.

What about long cracks?

Cracks up to approximately 14 inches may be repairable depending on location, depth, and overall damage. That word 'may' is doing real work. A 12-inch crack in the middle of the glass can be a better candidate than a 4-inch crack that has reached the edge.

The only honest way to answer it is to look at the crack, check both ends, and assess how far it has already travelled.

What a good repair delivers

A completed repair restores strength across the break, improves clarity substantially, and is designed to help prevent the damage from spreading further. It is not an erase function. Anyone promising an invisible result on every repair is overselling it.
