Windshield Damage
Why windshield chips spread — and why Utah makes it worse

Almost every customer who calls us says a version of the same thing: it was tiny last week. That is not bad luck or imagination — it is how laminated glass behaves once its surface is broken.
What a chip actually is
A windshield is two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. When a stone hits it, the outer layer takes the damage and the impact energy radiates outward from the contact point. What you see as a small white mark is the visible part of a break that extends down into the glass.
That break is now an open void. Air, water, and road grime get into it, and the glass around it has lost the even tension it was manufactured with.
Why temperature is the main culprit
Glass expands when it heats and contracts when it cools. Along the Wasatch Front, a 40-degree swing between a July afternoon and the following morning is unremarkable. Every one of those cycles flexes the glass, and the weakest point flexes most.
The fastest way to turn a chip into a crack is a big, sudden differential: a defroster blasting hot air at a frozen windshield, or cold water hitting glass that has been baking in a parking lot.
- Running the defroster on high on a frozen windshield
- A hot-water car wash after a cold night
- Potholes and expansion joints that flex the body of the vehicle
- Slamming doors with the windows fully closed
Utah-specific pressure
Two things stack the odds here. First, the I-15 corridor through Davis and Weber Counties is under continuous construction, which means loose gravel and truck traffic in the same lanes as commuters. Second, winter road treatment leaves sand and grit on the surface for months after each storm.
That combination is why we repair so many chips within a few miles of the same interchanges each season.
What waiting costs you
Fresh damage repairs best. A clean, uncontaminated break lets resin reach the full depth of the impact, which gives the best structural and visual result. After a week or two of dirt and moisture working in, that is no longer true — and a crack that reaches the edge of the glass generally cannot be repaired at all.
If you have a chip right now, the useful move is getting it looked at while it is still small and clean. RapidChip comes to your vehicle in Davis and Weber Counties, and most repairs take approximately 15–20 minutes.
